The function of the Legislative Branch

The first and most important job of Congress is to pass law. The authors of the Constitution realized they would need to pass laws, to change or add to the laws that already existed. They form the Congress to do this job.

The second job of congress is to check the powers of the executive and judicial branches of the goverment. A strong legislative branch was seen as a guarfantee against the possible tyranny of an executive or the judiciary.

The third fuction of congress is to keep the public informed. Members of congress have a duty to keep their constitutions informed about what is happening in the government. They try to provide information to help people understand the function of the goverment.

The fourth funcion of congress is to serve constituents in their dealings with the goverment. Often people will have problems when dealing with the complex bureaucracy.
